Noem Announces Body Cameras for Every Federal Officer in Minneapolis

(MENAFN) The Department of Homeland Security announced that all federal law enforcement officers working in Minneapolis, Minnesota, will be equipped with body cameras immediately. The move is intended to increase accountability amid rising tensions around federal operations in the city.

Secretary Kristi Noem shared the update on social media, emphasizing the immediacy of the initiative. "Effective immediately, we are deploying body cameras to every officer in the field in Minneapolis," she said.

Noem made the announcement after meetings with senior officials, including the acting ICE director, the head of Customs and Border Protection, and the department’s Border Czar. She also stressed the program could grow in scope. "As funding is available, the body camera program will be expanded nationwide.

"We will rapidly acquire and deploy body cameras to DHS law enforcement across the country," she added.

The decision comes amid ongoing protests against ICE operations and shootings by federal agents over the past month. Public outrage surged after the deaths of Alex Pretti, a 37-year-old intensive care nurse, and Renee Nicole Good, a 37-year-old mother of three, which intensified demands for independent investigations and raised questions about coordination with local authorities.

President Donald Trump commented on the deployment, noting that the decision was Noem’s to make. "I leave it to her," he told reporters. He also remarked on the general value of body cameras for policing, saying they "tend to be good" because they prevent misinformation. "If she wants to do the camera thing, that's okay with me," he added.
