Trump Administration Scales Back Immigration Enforcement in Minnesota
"Given this increase in unprecedented collaboration, and as a result of the need of less law enforcement officers to do this work in a safer environment, I am announcing that effective immediately, we will draw down 700 people," Homan said at a Minneapolis news conference.
He added that the administration has moved "immediately" to prioritize full body camera deployment in the city.
Protests against Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) operations and shootings by federal agents have been ongoing for more than a month across Minnesota. Demonstrations escalated nationwide following the Jan. 24 killing of 37-year-old intensive care nurse Alex Pretti by immigration officers and the Jan. 7 death of 37-year-old mother of three Renee Nicole Good.
The Pretti incident intensified tensions, with local and state leaders demanding independent investigations and questioning federal cooperation.
President Donald Trump told a news outlet Wednesday that the decision to scale back the federal presence came from him. "Yes, it did," he said when asked if he personally made the call.
"But it didn't come from me because I just wanted to do it. We have — we are waiting for them to release prisoners. Give us the murderers that they're holding, and all of the bad people, drug dealers, all of the bad people," he added.
