Minnesota State Fall Enrollment Holds Steady, Demonstrating Continued Demand for Affordable, Accessible Higher Education

ST. PAUL, Minn., October 14, 2026  – Enrollment across the Minnesota State system of 33 colleges and universities remained stable overall for the start of the 2026-2027 academic year, reflecting continued student demand for high-quality, affordable higher education and workforce training across the state.

Enrollment data show total credit headcount increased slightly to 172,879 students, up 535 students (0.3%) from fall 2025. Growth at Minnesota State colleges offset enrollment declines at some universities, resulting in overall flat enrollment. Minnesota State colleges enrolled 118,429 students, an increase of 1.5 percent, while universities enrolled 54,450 students.

"Steady enrollment across the Minnesota State system demonstrates that students continue to see tremendous value in the affordable, accessible, and high-quality education offered by our colleges and universities," said Chancellor Scott Olson. "Our commitment remains focused on student success, ensuring every learner has access to the education, support, and opportunities they need to achieve their goals and support the workforce needs of our state.”

Minnesota State serves more than 270,000 students annually through credit and non-credit programs and is the state's largest provider of higher education. More than 60 percent of Minnesota resident students pursuing an undergraduate credential attend a Minnesota State college or university. Minnesota State also serves more Black and Indigenous students and students of color than all other higher education providers in Minnesota combined.

Minnesota State institutions offer the lowest tuition in Minnesota, helping make higher education accessible to students from all backgrounds. Additionally, 55 percent of college students and 59 percent of university students receive financial aid, reducing financial barriers and supporting student success.
