Corps of Engineers closing its Minneapolis locks for the season

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, St. Paul District, is closing its Upper Mississippi River locks and dams in Minneapolis for the season starting Nov. 1. The scheduled closures will officially end the 2026 navigation season in Minneapolis.

Lower St. Anthony Falls Lock and Dam and Lock and Dam 1, both located in Minneapolis, will close to all river traffic Nov. 1. St. Paul District locks and dams south of St. Paul will remain open for navigation for at least another month.

Lock and Dam 2, near Hastings, Minnesota, and Lock and Dam 3, near Welch, Minnesota, will close to all river traffic Dec. 1. These sites are closing to undergo critical maintenance and repairs on the guidewall tow rail systems that support commercial vessels through the lock chamber. Construction is anticipated to be completed in time for the 2027 navigation season.

The St. Paul District navigation program provides a safe, reliable, cost-effective and environmentally sustainable waterborne transportation system on the Upper Mississippi River for the movement of commercial goods and for national security needs. To do this, the district maintains a 9-foot navigation channel and 13 locks and dams from Minneapolis to Guttenberg, Iowa. Keeping this system open is vital to the nation’s economy.
